The Um island and its Amazing Virgin Beaches

The coast lovers often fantasized they could stop over in an island in the middle of sea which having paradise-on-earth scenery. Not only they are free to swim, but also free sunbathed, playing kayak, and even enjoying the sun sank into the earth. The quilt of the dusk and breeze of coastal wind hammock us to prevent from leaving the coast.

The coastal luxury and the beauty of purple sky can be found in the Um island. The island which is located at Makbon District, Sorong, West Papua, will become one of the main place to visit when you travel to the most eastern province of Indonesia. It is a small island and you just spend 15 minutes to round it by walk.

Not only beautiful scenery and wonderful beaches, the island guarantees the visitors and tourists they will feel the tranquality of the virgin island. The nature wealth of Um island is also very precious to be enjoyed.

If you like diving, don't forget to bring diving equipment. It is because the Um island will spoil your sense with the beautiful performance of the karag fish, turtle, lola, tripang, lobster, and the beauty of coral that look like carving naturally. All of them still look so virgin because the local people of Malaumkarta Village, who lives at the opposite island, always take care of their environment. They do not catch some certain sea animals within certain time to prevent animals and enviroment from extinction. It is why they also never catch fishes with fish net and bomb. They just catch fishes with fishing rod.

This island is also often used by the fisherman as the stopping-place when they do fishing. If you are lucky to meet one of them, you could enjoy burning fresh fishes, captured directly from the sea. Usually the fisherman here do not mind to sell some of their catches. A tenggiri fish or bubara, enough for four persons, can be bought just only 2 thousand rupiah or at least not more than 2 US dollar.


Um Island is also home of bats where they live on branches of the forest trees. So do not forget to take your precious opportunity to enjoy bats flying together and alighting from one to another tree.

Then, how we can go to the heaven island of Um?

To reach the Um Island, you have to go to Makbon by land route. From Sorong City, it is available public's transport headed to Makbon with a price of 15.000 rupiahs or 1,5 US dollar one way. The trip at about 40 kilometre to Makbon will be taken at around 2 till 3 hours.

Arriving at Makbon, you must be still continuing the trip to the Um Island using a rentlongboat; It is because there is still no public transport to the island. To lease the boat, you must take from your wallet Rp 300,000 to travel for 30 minutes until arriving in the Um Island.
