There are 245 kinds of birds at Mount Gede. When Junghuhn climbed Mount Gede Pangrango in 1839, he found two Java rhinoceros near the peak (Kandang Badak). One of them was bathing in a little river and another was browsing at the the river bank. Junghuhn was the first European climbing the mountain. At 150 years ago, there were still the wild ox of Java and deers. In 1929, there were still also leopard (Panthera Pardus) found, and in 1986 their numbers remained 10. However, today their existence are unknown.
The primata animals in the mountain are extinct, but there are still in the National Park the faunas like owa (Hylobates Moloch), Surili (Presbytis Comata Comata) and Lutung Budeng (Trachypithecus auratus auratus). There are still also exticnt animals like leopard (Panthera Pardus Melas), Java porcupine (Hystrix Brachyura Brachyura), deer (Muntiacus muntjak muntjak), and yellow throat civet (Martes Flavigula).
Mount Gede Pangrango National Park is known rich of many kinds of birds. From 450 kinds of birds lived in Java, 251 kinds are exist in the mountain, such as Java eagle (Spizaetus bartelsi) and owl (Otus angelinae).
The Gede Pangrango Mountain National Park is stated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Sanctuary in 1977, and as a Sister Park with Stated Park at Malaysia in 1995.
